Hunting in Mongolia

Altay Mountains

OVERVIEW

Mongolia is a unique country that offers a big variety of hunting opportunities and by far, is the primary destination for a premier argali and ibex hunting. Amongst all the big game variety the country accommodates for the hunters, no doubt, both are the most sought after for the sheep hunting society. These crown jewels of trophy rooms, are possibly some of the high priority species for any serious trophy hunter.

Ibex in Mongolia is believed to be smaller than other Asiatic ibex of any kind, yet still thick legged and solidly built. Although Altai and Gobi ibex have a strong resemblance, Gobi is considerably smaller in both body and horn size. The average horn length for Gobi ibex considered to be 35-37” in most areas while good mature Altai ibex carry an average horn length of 40-42”. Horns measuring over 45 inches in length can be considered very good to exceptional.

Ibex in Mongolia are patchily distributed in rugged terrain throughout the western half of the country besides in central and south-central. More specifically, ibex inhabit the High Altai mountains as well as the Hangai range besides the canyons, rocky outcrops and other rugged terrain throughout Gobi Desert. However the largest number of ibex occurs in the Altai and western Hangai ranges.

Although the major threat to the wildlife in Mongolia is grazing competition and disturbance from livestock, ibex is probably less affected than argali because of the more precipitous terrain it lives in.

HOW TO ARRIVE

Ulaanbaatar can be reached from any major European cities mainly via Moscow or Istanbul as both Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines have direct flights for the Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN) which is the only port of entry to the country. For American and Mexican clients Seoul or Beijin may be another good option to consider. Korean Air and Air China fly to ULN regularly.

Upon arrival to the country the hunter is met by our company representative (one of the Caprinae PHs) at the airport and may be taken to the hotel to rest and overnight. Next day a flight of nearly 1 hour 30 minutes is in order to reach a town called Dalanzadgad. Here the hunter takes another 2 - 3 hour ride to reach the camp. Once the Gobi ibex hunt is over, the hunting party returns back to UB to overnight and rest. The following day group takes off for a town in west Mongolia named Khovd. The flight takes about 3 hours but hunters should be aware of the 1 hour time difference between U.B and the west part of the country. Once in Khovd, 4-6 hours car ride mainly on dirt roads is required to reach to the camp.

AREAS, ALTITUDE, METHOD

Altai ibex inhabits the high Altai mountain region of western and southwestern Mongolia. Here the ibex populations are distributed in hilly terrain at the elevations of 8200- 10,000feet (2500 – 3000 meters). The pre-scouting done by the local guides prior to hunt determines the immediate hunting area. Depending on the area, horses or jeeps can be used during the hunt. Last stalk that brings the hunter within the shooting distance is executed on foot once the ram of desired size is located.

Gobi ibex is located in the south central portion of Mongolia. Steppe-covered valleys with rocky outcrops and the spectacular mountains of the Gobi desert form these elusive animals’ habitat. The camp is situated approximately 150 km of Dalanjargalan and the elevations vary between 5000-6500 feet (1500-2000 meters). In contrast to horseback hunting in some of the West Altai region, Gobi argali and ibex are hunted mostly by driving around in jeeps until spotting the game. Last stalk is done on foot once the ibex of suitable size is spotted.

SEASON, WEATHER, ACCOMMODATION

The season for ibex hunts in Mongolia runs from July 15st to October15th, best time being the latest period. The weather conditions in earlier periods are warm and nice. Later on in season the weather tends to turn cooler and rainy.

Traditional style dome-shaped yurts are used to accommodate hunters. Also called yurtta by Russians these tents are made of felt and big enough to lodge a whole Mongolian family. They are equipped with wood/coal stoves and well insulated to keep the dwellers warm.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

4 actual hunting days are required for each species. Including travelling days –1 day in and 1 day out– and days spent in UB makes the whole hunt 14 day programme. On the other hand, the whole hunt can be practically completed 3-4 days earlier than planned schedule. However it is our company policy to reserve 14 days for the hunt to be on the safe side.

Day 01. Arrival to the capital city Ulaanbaatar and overnight.

Day 02. Flight to Dalanzadgad and drive to the hunting area.

Day 03-06. Gobi ibex hunt.

Day 07. Return back to U.B.

Day 08. Flight to Khovd and transfer to the camp.

Day 09-12. Altai ibex hunt.

Day 13. Return back to U.B and overnight.

Day 14. Departure for home.
