We sometimes wonder about the motivation of a man who climbs the mountains after his quarry at the age of 86 when the mountains are steep enough for most of us anyway. Normally an average hunter would sit in his rocking chair against the fire place after the age of 70 and cherish the memories of the good old days. But not everyone.
We are not so sure that there are many hunters out there who decides to hunt Sind ibex in his mid eighties only because the ibex he collected about 30 years ago was not big enough. It takes only a special person to take such a decision and execute it. For the ones who does not know H. Cuellar, we must say he is one of these very few exceptions. But of course we are talking about a person who made fifteen trips to Mongolia, twenty trips to Tajikstan and maybe even more trips to China. This is a guy who made at least one trip to either CAR or to Cameroon every single year because he loved hunting the Giant Eland. Although he kept a written record of almost every trip he made, most probably even himself lost the track of all the hunting trips he took in the past 50 years. But obviously, there were enough to earn him the Weatherby award exactly thrity years ago.
This past trip was Hectors tenth hunting trip to Pakistan although the last time he hunted Pakistan was about thirty years ago. When we did not hunt and found some free time at the camp to have a little chat, he told us how different the hunting was in Balochistan back then. Riding on camel back with little water available and sleeping in tents at night. The game was scarce and the trophy quality was not even comparable to what it is today. It was a pleasure to listen to Hector’s stories in the camp. While hunting, watching him was an inspiration for all of us. Climbing high was a bit tough for the legend this time and his eyesight was not nearly as good as it was thirty years ago. But none of these obstacles was bigger than his passion inside. Eventually Hector and his daughter Alejandra both collected their ibex but the memories of this hunt with us will last forever. Each time this hunting legend hunts with Caprinae, our respect and fondness of him grow even bigger. It has been our privilidge to have another hunt with Hector Cuellar.
