Hunting in Russia

Kamchatka Peninsula

OVERVIEW

Kamchatka brown bear is one of the four available brown bear subspecies in Russia and considered to be the largest predator of the country. Their diet of a combination of salmon along with some nuts high in nutrition contributes to their huge size. It is closely related to brown bears in Alaska and northwest North America and it is thought to be the ancestor of both the Kodiak bear and Alaska Peninsula brown bear. Kamchatka peninsula where these carnivores can be hunted is home to the densest population of brown bears in the world. Hunting these giant beasts of prey in their own habitat can be one of the most thrilling adventures under the sun. As Russia and brown bear grew into be synonymous for hundreds of years, we feel that any serious bear hunter owes it to himself to hunt these true monsters

AREAS, ALTITUDE, METHOD

Hunting starts very early in the camp with a hearty Russian breakfast. Search of traces of a bear is done on snowmobiles. Guide and the hunter can ride long hours on the snowmobile &on the sledge before they cut a fresh bear track. However the real pursuit starts once the tracks are found and agreed on the bear is worth going after. Brown bears can be spotted against white snow from great distances in Kamchatka during spring time. Once the desired size bear is confirmed by checking it with binoculars, the last stalk is executed on foot. Most shots come within about 200 yards. Once the trophy is shot, field trophy care is made by the PH. In the base camp the trophy will be prepared for the further transportation. A Capercaillie can be added on to the tag in spring time.

SEASON, WEATHER, ACCOMMODATION

Annual hunting season for bears are divided into two separate periods. They can be hunted in spring as well as in autumn. Both periods have their own cons and pros. April 25 – May 25, September 1 – October 15

Base camps are wooden hunting houses: separate cabins are for living and for dining. Tented camps are also used in some areas. There are always a generator set, satellite connection and sauna on every base camp.
