Hunting in Russia

Askaut, Maruha, Arhyz

OVERVIEW

Although most of sheep hunting world today is familiar with the word of “Tur”, most people mix it up with Tahr which is indiginous to Himalayans only. The word actually comes from Russian language meaning Caucasian wild goat. It makes a lot of sense to call these creatures Western Tur as the animals are native to only western part of the Caucasus mountain range. Some others refer to this subspecies as Kuban Tur, named after the basin of the Kuban river in southwestern Russia.

Along with Dagestan Tur hunt, Kuban Tur hunting is considered to be the most challenging and thus regarded as the ultimate test for the mountain game hunters. It requires good physical condition as the steep mountain slopes can be taxing for the Tur hunters.

HOW TO ARRIVE

Being one of the major hubs between Europe and Asia, Moscow can be reached from any major cities in Europe. In addition to these connecting flights from Europe, American hunters can also use direct American Airlines and Delta flights as an option. While Delta has been flying between Moscow and two U.S. cities N.Y. and Atlanta for many years, AA recently started flights to Moscow from its home base Chicago. After spending a night in Moscow, following morning hunters take a two hour domestic flight to a Russian town named Mineralnye Vody, a town located on the northern edge of the Caucasus mountains. From here a car ride that lasts about 4-6 hours completes the transfer to the base camp.

AREAS, ALTITUDE, METHOD

Kuban Tur can be found only in a relatively small part of the Caucasus between the Chugush mountain and the upper Baksan river, a range only 300 km in length. This area falls into Kuban and Karachaevo Cherkessia districts. Our hunts take place in the later area which provides us with several different hunting camps. The main hunting territories are located in the valleys of the rivers Askaut, Maruha, Arhyz. Here it is possible to combine the hunt with the Caucasian chamois.

The camps are commonly located at 5000 -7000 feet. Hunting may take the hunters to higher altitudes at times but these occasions are usually limited at 10000 feet. The hunts can combine extensive horseback riding, considerable amount of hiking & climbing and glassing. Once the desirable trophy size is located, one last stalk takes the hunter within shooting range. When not possible small drives can be applicable.

SEASON, WEATHER, ACCOMMODATION

It is hard to make a general statement about the weather conditions in Caucasus mountains as it tends to change so rapidly. Although hunts can be done any time from August 1 through mid November, best times are August and September. At this period weather conditions are usually at its best, nice and warm. But some shower can be expected all the time.

Hunters are accommodated in tented camps or in cabins with basic necessities.
