Hunting in Russia

Mount Elbrus

OVERVIEW

Although most of sheep hunting world today is familiar with the word of “Tur”, the word actually comes from Russian language meaning Caucasian wild goat. Most authorities recognize three different Tur species and the Mid-Caucasian is considered to be a hybrid between western and eastern races. Therefore different forms of horn can be observed within the same herd of these animals. Individual horns are believed to vary from supracervical like those of Dagestan Tur though often with cross ridges like those of Kuban Tur, to long and scimitar-shaped like those of Kuban but relatively smooth like those of Dagestan. Mid-Caucasian Tur is noticeably big and stockier in body size when compared to other two types thus is harder to put down.

HOW TO ARRIVE

The capitol city, Moscow can be reached from any major cities in Europe. In addition to these connecting flights from Europe, American hunters can also use direct American Airlines and Delta flights as an option. While Delta has been flying between Moscow and two U.S. cities N.Y. and Atlanta for many years, AA recently started flights to Moscow from its home base Chicago.

After spending a night in Moscow, hunters take a two hour domestic flight the following morning to Mineralnye Vody, a town located on the northern edge of the Caucasus mountains. From here a car ride that lasts about 3-4 hours completes the transfer to a small city called Nalchik. After spending the night here in a small hotel like building reserved only for hunters, another 3-4 hour car ride to the hunting camp is in order. Then horses are used to get to the base camp.

AREAS, ALTITUDE, METHOD

Mid-Caucasian Tur can be found only in a relatively small part of the Caucasus around mount Elbruz which is the highest point on the whole range. This area falls into Kabardino Balkaria district and provides us with several different hunting camps.

The camps are commonly located between 8000” and 10.500”. Hunting may take the hunters to higher altitudes at times but these occasions are usually limited. The hunts require considerable amount of hiking & climbing and glassing. Once the desirable trophy size is located, one last stalk takes the hunter within shooting range. When not possible small drives can be applicable.

SEASON, WEATHER, ACCOMMODATION

It is hard to make a general statement about the weather conditions in Caucasus mountains as it tends to change so rapidly. Although hunts can be done any time from August 1 through mid November, best time can be the end of August and the first half of September. At this period weather conditions are usually nice and warm. But some shower can be expected all the time.

Hunters are accommodated in tented camps with basic necessities.
