SEASON: Hunting season for Alpine ibex officially starts by early August and ends by the end of December. Best time for an Alpine ibex hunt can be a debatable matter. While earlier periods offer enjoyable hunting in a beautiful surroundings, later periods in late November-December when the rut occurs, is more likely the produce exceptional trophies.

AREA: With the closure of Switzerland, Austria became the major destination for hunting Alpine ibex. Although Slovenia holds a small population of Alpine ibex it offers very limited hunting which makes Austria the only place to hunt. The area we hunt in Austria is in the beautiful Styria region. Here both Alpine ibex and Alpine chamois are widely distributed with consistent populations and can be hunted in their free ranging habitat. Austria also offers the option of hunting on fenced private properties where the trophy quality can be really good. Ibex in these fenced enclosures usually support bigger horns than those of free-ranging area.

HOW TO GET THERE: Hunters are required to fly into Vienna where our English/German speaking PH/interpreter meets the clients. Austria is one of the easiest countries to get your rifle into. Our local outfitter and Caprinae PH drives you to the area which is only 2 hours away from the airport.

ACCOMMODATION: Hunters are accommodated in the best available hotel near the hunting area. It is a small but clean and cozy local hotel with all the modern amenities including a spa. The hotel also have a nice restaurant that serves all kinds of food besides Austrian/German dishes.

WEATHER: The weather tends to be nice during early season hunts in October. Although first snow may have fallen some time in November, this melts away quite fast. But temperatures also fall sharply. December meets hunters with quite a bit snow on the ground which may make hunting harder.

ALTITUDE: The hotel for the Alpine ibex hunt is located at approximately 2,000 feet (600 meters) above sea level, with the majority of the hunting conducted between 2,600 and 3,000 feet (700-900 meters)

DURATION of the HUNT: Our Alpine ibex hunting organisations are for 4 days including the 2 days of traveling time. So actual hunting time is 2 days which is enough time to harvest a nice billy.

HUNTING METHOD: Hunting method is usually a combination of driving around in four wheel drive trucks and/or hunting on foot once a desired size trophy billy is located.
